Indian Territory Texas Longhorn Association’s “Smoke Signal”, April 2005
ITTLA Enjoys Buckhorn Hospitality
Indian Territory members gathered in the shelter of Buck and Sharon Adams new ranch house recently completed on their River Hill Ranch at the Buckhorn Cattle Co. In the great room upstairs you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Cimarron River gently rolling along on its way as members of their Texas Longhorn herd graze near by. The ranch is located just off of Interstate 35 and southwest of the spot where the Cimarron goes under it, North of Guthrie, OK You can also hear the soft clicking of a pump jack as it pumps black gold from beneath the rolling hills.
Cloudy skies and a brisk north wind were no hindrance to the 45 plus Longhorn enthusiasts that lunched on Bar B Que beef, sliced turkey with all the trimmings and looked forward to touring the Adams’ expansive ranch and herd of outstanding Longhorn cattle they founded in 1997 with the purchase of 4 Texas Longhorn cows at a ranch sale, this was the humble beginning of what is now an elite-caliber program.
A top decision was their purchase of the reputation herd sire, Not Gunna.
Their herd has evolved into three distinctive groups. A Butler blend group, the 100% Butler pasture and the Twisty Horn grouping.
They continue to judiciously gauge the effect new animals will have on their bottom line.
Sharon, a director of Indian Territory Association and Buck have brought their herd a long way in a short time. It was a very much appreciated day for the membership, we thank you for taking the time to share your cattle with us and being such fine hosts.
Johnston Longhorns to Host ITTLA May 28th
Indian Territory members are scheduled to meet at Larry and Gayla Johnston’s Longhorn Ranch near Lookeba, OK on Saturday, May 28th. A meeting will begin at 11:00 AM followed by a Pot Luck Lunch.
The day will end with a tour of the Johnston’s Longhorn herd, which includes their big black Amigo Chex bull and one of my favorites the “Texas Star” cow.
Located near Lookeba, OK in Caddo County on Highway 8. For more exact directions you can call Larry in the evenings at 405/457-6569 or by email to johnstonlonghorns@hotmail.com I know they will be glad to know you are coming and give you a heads up on how to get there.
We will be discussing the show results and get an update on how our August sale is progressing.
Jim Palmer, Fulfilled His Cowboy Dream, was a Buckaroo
James D. Palmer, a former Secretary and Board of Director of the International Texas Longhorn Association died suddenly April 6, 2005 at his WH Cattle Co. residence in Elizabeth, PA.
Jim was named ITLA Breeder of the Year in 2002., and was one of the best liked Longhorn breeders in the industry. The founder of Tri State Hydraulics, Inc. he was a member of West Newton United Presbyterian Church, was a Korean War Navy veteran, a member of Indian Territory Longhorn Association, where he attended many association sales, buying and selling cattle. He was a member of the Oklahoma Buckaroos, a lets have fun group of Texas Longhorn Aficionados, was a charter life member and past president of the Northeast Texas Longhorn Association and was the spark that led that group to plan and schedule it’s first auction sale of cattle scheduled for May 7th of this year. A respected and sought after ITLA show judge he entered and participated in events throughout the country and most recently was a judge at the ITLA Championship Show in Glen Rose, TX He was founder and supporter of a Youth Wrestling program in PA. Survived by wife, Janice, sons, James D, II, John M, Scott D and Cheryl Palmer Wall. Jim often included grandchildren Justin, Jimmy, Kimberly, David, Nicole, Paige and Jessica in attending Longhorn shows, sales and conventions. He lived the cowboy lifestyle and left boots not easily to be filled.
“When it’s all been said and done, There is just one thing that matters, Did I do my best to live for truth, Did I Live my life for you...When it’s all been said and done, You’re my life when life is gone.”
Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation To Establish Jim Palmer Memorial
The directors of the Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation have announced the “Jim Palmer Memorial Fund” has been established in honor of the late Jim Palmer. Memorial gifts will be used for funding the architectural design for the Texas Longhorn Heritage Center which will be built on the choice land donated for that purpose at Glen Rose, Texas.
Jim had agreed to serve and been elected as a Director of the Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation and was looking forward to assisting in the establishment and construction of the Center.
“Whatever is done will, of course, honor Jim and be an encouragement to Janice and their family. And it will generate funding for an endeavor that Jim had invested in and was planning to put his time into” stated TLHF Director Stan Searle.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the Jim Palmer Memorial Fund, Texas Longhorn Heritage Foundation, Post Office Box 1770, Glen Rose, Texas 76043.
Palmerisms worth remembering:

“Don’t tickle the alligator until after you’ve swum the river” ...
ITLA Schedules May 28th Sale for ALL Longhorn Breeders
Mark your calendar and plan to attend the International Texas Longhorn Association Spring Longhorn Sale, May 28, 2005 at 12 Noon in the Clifton Livestock Commission, located on highway 6, 32 miles North of Waco, Texas and South of Clifton, Texas.
All registered cattle will be accepted for the sale for a total consignment fee of $95. An easy and cost effective way to market your cattle, there are no consignment deadlines months before the sale, just check-in cattle on the day before, by 6:00 PM to be cataloged, or by 11:00 AM on sale day for ropers and commercial, which pay only a 7% commission.
Brucellosis testing will be done at the sale facility at no additional charge which means no trips to the vet’s office or costly ranch visits. Palpations can be done at the facility also for a $5.00 fee.
You may pre-register your consignments or obtain seller packets and forms from either www.longhornroundup.com or www.itla.com or contact the sale manager, Russell Hooks, 409/423-1472 or the Sale Sponsor and Host, ITLA Office, 817/244-8855. Selling the sale will be the legend of Texas Longhorn auctioneers, Colonel Eddie Wood, ‘gather round boys, we’re gonna swap stock’. Buyers payments will be electronically processed the day of the sale and sellers checks will be available for pick-up in the sale office after the sale ends. “Load up Bessie, your Clifton bound.”
Longhorn Round-Up Sale Makes Longhorn History
Saturday, April 16th saw another chapter written in the book of Texas Longhorn history as the Russell Hooks Spring Longhorn Round-Up Sale in Crockett, Texas got underway. The sale was not only conducted to those attending in the Houston County Livestock arena, it was broadcast worldwide by Superior Livestock Marketing on the RFD-TV channel on both Dish Network and Direct TV.
Many questioned the wisdom of placing a Texas Longhorn sale on TV and getting live bids and participants. Well let me tell you it worked as the first cow, a tremendous 70 plus inch specimen was sold by Colonel Eddie Woods via the satellite TV to Joe Graddy in Cottonwood, Alabama when the smoke cleared for a grand total of $20,000. That was just the beginning as buyers throughout the country went on line to bid against those in the sale barn audience for the good looking set of cattle offered. When all was said and done there were more cattle sold via the Superior satellite bid takers than by the three working the crown in the arena.
Another great thing for the sellers, they were able to pick up their checks in the sale office following the sale.
Russell Hooks and his sale company are to be commended for working with Superior to provide this great innovation for sale of Texas Longhorns to his consignors and buyers. “Be Mo Betta Next Time.”
Legacy Longhorn Sale Sets New Marks
Texas Longhorn breeders and ‘cow traders’ Bill Hudson, John Stockton and Joe Valentine put together one of the most memorable Texas Longhorn sale experience of this young century in the Doral Tesoro Hotel and Golf Club, Alliance/Ft. Worth. They treated some 400 plus to steak dinners with all the trimmings the night before and then sale day saw as fine a set of cattle to ever stand in Texas go on the auction block and sell for record prices as quickly as they could enter the ring, with lot 1 bringing $20,000 the tone was set. The high seller, was Hudson Longhorns’ “Outspoken”, the 9 year old cow turned a $81,000 final bid from Bill and Judy Meridith. The last cow to come in, lot 100, showed the crowd was still ready to bid as she gathered $11,000 for Hudson Longhorns.
Indian Territory members that had cattle in the sale included Buckhorn Cattle Co. ’Blue Smoke, $9000; Moore’s Longhorn Ranch “Hot Shot Twisty”, $9000; Wesley Watson, Watson 409, $11,000.
Looks like those boys know how to put on a Longhorn Sale, I understand that they plan on doing it again next year, and if so I plan on being there instead of loosing my appetite in Las Vegas. Does what goes on there really stay there? Time will tell.
ITTLA Spring Show and Powwow, coming up!
After visiting with Bob and Sue Pattison I know why the annual ITTLA Spring Show and Powwow is such a success and enjoyable Texas Longhorn event. It is practically a stress free event for those attending, Bob and Sue and a supporting cast of members of ITTLA have another great time planned in the Kiamichis. The Ag Complex on the campus of Eastern Oklahoma State University in Wilburton, OK is the location, May 21 and 22 are the dates and the Wilburton Inn and Suites is host motel. The ITLA Judge for the Youth, Haltered and Loose Cattle classes will be Bill Henderson of Spring, Texas. Also included will be ‘Cowboy Church’ Sunday morning along with Sue’s famous Biscuits and Sausage Gravy. Saturday evening there will be entertainment provided by the hosts along with several vendors of Texas Longhorn and Western novelties. So make your plans now to spend a few days this Spring in Oklahoma’s Kiamichi Mountains with your ITTLA friends.
The View from the Teepee
All of us were saddened by the recent deaths of ITTLA member Jim Palmer at his WH Cattle Co. residence, Elizabeth, PA and also of a well known Texas Longhorn lady, Pat Beach, Calpat Longhorns, Coupland, TX. Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families and friends. Both were well know in Texas Longhorn activities and supported the cattle to their utmost abilities. They will be missed as we gather in the days ahead at sales, shows and meetings.
We hope that the proper avenue of memorialization will soon be established so members of the Texas Longhorn industry can see that they, and others will be remembered in perpetuity. May they rest in peace. + + + + + + + + +
We have sure had several bang up sales in recent days that have made the efforts of many breeders worthwhile. I noticed that a Semen lot of the bull JM Sue recently went for a final bid at the Legacy sale for a whopping $148,900.00, he must put full grown progeny on the ground.
We have several things coming at us all at once right away, first up will be our Show at Wilburton, Bob & Sue have worked their hearts out, and it has become a must attend event on the show circuit. Lots of fun for those of us that don’t show too. Close on the heels of the show will be the meeting and ranch tour at Larry and Gayla Johnston’s Longhorn Ranch, Lookeba, OK. That same weekend the ITLA will sponsor a Texas Longhorn sale at Clifton, Texas. It will include registered as well as ropers and commercial Longhorns. Then on the horizon but coming at us, is our annual Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha and Longhorn Cow Sale in August.
Hope to see you at one of the above events …till then, Vaya Con Dios

The ITTLA “Longhorn Social” this year was in the air conditioned Murray County Fairgrounds building. A Bar-B-Q Buffet was enjoyed by all attending. A hundred sixty or so were on hand for eating, socializing and visiting. The location worked out very well and may be used for the 2005 event as the Chickasaw Lodge is to be soon razed for a new Hotel-Casino and restaurant, to be completed in late 2005.
A good time was had by all and the food was good, nuff sed.
Golden Wedding Bells For Ray & Bernice Moore
Ray and Bernice Moore were honored on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary September 11, 2004 at the Elks Lodge, Sulphur, OK. Mother’s of Ray and Bernice were honored guests.
A large group of friends from Colorado, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Utah and Oklahoma were on hand to give them a rousing celebration that was enjoyed by all. Best wishes.
The View From The Teepee - Barry Judd. ITTLA President
Greetings from your President...We have just completed what many have described as the most successful “Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha” and Longhorn Cow Sale our association has sponsored and I agree.
The members of Indian Territory Texas Longhorn Association continue to work together for the success of not only the association, but of each other.
From the planning to the final completion everything has gone as smooth as could be expected. Our members have stepped forward in each area of responsibility and done a professional job for both the consignors and the buyers.
This year we had probably the best overall group of cattle we have ever had. Our publicity covered all media available to us as the list of prospective buyers shows. We had a large group of first time buyers and many representatives from the well known and highly visible Longhorn ranches.
From the Longhorn Social, the sale and the Silent Auction every member that was asked or wanted to participate was able and welcome to. This is what it takes for an association of like minded folks to succeed, participation.

Spring Show & Pow Wow Continues To Grow
The 2004 Spring Show and Pow Wow was an overwhelming success and great time for all that were there to participate.
The entries were in excess of 165 and a large contingent of folks accompanying them made a favorable impression on the community of Wilburton, OK.
From the first show, which was haltered only to now when most entries were for the non-haltered or ‘free’ classes. This part of the show is expected to keep increasing each year and allows every owner of a Texas Longhorn animal to compete. No special training or handling is required. Just load ‘em up and haul ‘em to the show.
It is fabulous to see each class enter the arena, ‘free’ to roam and do their thing as the judge wanders among them to make the placements.
This spring event is a favorite of all members and many exhibitors look forward to the third weekend in May when its Spring Texas Longhorn Show and Pow Wow time in the Kiamichis of Oklahoma.
A debt of appreciation and gratitude is extended to Terry Ward from Iowa for his special above the call efforts and assistance to our association. He has been awarded an honorary membership in our association. Thanks Terry.

The “Longhorn Social” sponsors who contribute to make the ‘social’ a great time for out consignors, buyers and members. This year is will be in the Murray County Fairgrounds and will feature a BBQ buffet with the trimmings. Big Day at the C. C. Land & Cattle Co.
The sun shined bright on ITTLA when we gathered at Carol Carlson’s C.C. Land & Cattle Co. for our April meeting. Bob Pattison Stricken with Lymes Disease?
Following his attendance at the April 24th CC Land & Cattle Co. meeting and ranch tour, and shortly after returning home, Bob Pattison was taken ill with fever and chills. His wife Sue, a registered nurse, took him to the Wilburton Hospital and following examination treatment, things continued to get worse. Arrangements were made and he was air lifted to St Edward Mercy Health Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas where he was admitted there and diagnosed possibly with Lymes Disease and Pneumonia. He is now stabilized his condition is much improved. He will be there for the immediate future before going home on or about Wednesday, May 5th. Get-well cards and wishes should be directed to Bob at his home in Wilburton.
I am sure he will need a period of extended convalescence (at his extended age especially) No doubt we ALL will need to pitch in and help with the coming ITTLA Show more so than ever.
Maybe Sue ought to get him a flea and tick collar for Father’s day.
We send our best wishes for his quick recovery and return home with good health.

They participate in as many of our association activities as possible and also exhibit cattle in both the ITLA and TLBAA shows. The Horn Showcase competitions are another area that their cattle shine in. Not only in shows but Texas Longhorn sales where they both buy and sell.
ITTLA will also conduct a windup meeting regarding our show and get into the final preparations of our coming sale. A fine time and the opportunity to see an excellent longhorn herd, be sure and mark June 26th on your calendar for a two-fold celebration. We will also have a potluck lunch so bring a side dish or desert. Be There.
Winners of ‘03 Free Consignment Returning to Sale
Jim Small winner of the 2003 drawing for a free consignment to the 2004 Indian Territory Sale of “Waaka Lapish Faloha” (cow horn long) has notified the sale committee that he and his family plan on attending the 2004 sale and taking advantage of the free consignment won when his name was selected from the list of buyers from the 2003 Indian Territory sale.
They will be bringing their consignments from their Arch Acres Ranch, Attica, Indiana. And may be bred to their 62 inch herd sire “Front Page.
Their daughter Jessica was the winner of an ITLA Scholarship in the amount of $1000 at the 2003 International Championship Show and Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jessica is a freshman at the University of Purdue where she is a student with a major in Pre Veterinary Medicine.
Looks like Dad may not have to worry about those big vet bills in the future.
The View From The Teepee
Annabelle Kennard reports that a cow she had consigned to the 2003 ITTLA sale, but PO’d and took back home has had a set of twin heifers. Congratulations Annabelle, I’d call that a PO at the right time.
In answer to some questions regarding our show and the necessity of securing a health certificate the following is in affect. For cattle entered from Oklahoma there is no requirement of a health certificate. However all females over 20 months must have been palpated and the results shown on a health certificate for entry. Show stock females over 20 months must be palpated and show on health certificate by vet. All out of state animals will need health certificates as is usual for entry into Oklahoma and return to their home state.
Recent Longhorn sales, notably the Round-Up Sale, Celebration Sale and the Red McCombs sale have been real barnburners, with sale prices setting new highs in many instances. This weekend, May 8th is the Spring Cowtown Sale in Fort Worth. We plan on attending and are anxious to see if the trend holds. I’ve got my mark on several in the catalog, so time will tell.
COMING ATTRACTIONS INCLUDE
MAY 22-23 ITTLA Spring Show & Pow Wow, Wilburton, Oklahoma.
JUN 2-5 The TLBAA Longhorn Expo and the Summer Horn Showcase Sale, Ft. Worth, TX
JUN 11-12 The Millennium Futurity & Sale Waxahachie, Texas
JUL 24 The Hotter’n Hell Show, Lonestar Longhorn Association, Midlothian, TX
NOTE: The Longhorn Classic Measuring & Sale, Stillwater, OK set for July 31st, has been cancelled. May be rescheduled in 2005.

Mel Raley, 1956-2004
Mel Raley, cowboy, poet laureate to Texas Longhorn Cattle and the Western life, died March 31, 2004. Born April 16, 1956 in Garden City, Kansas he had been ranch foreman for several Texas Longhorn ranches before becoming manager of the El Coyote Texas Longhorn operation near Riviera, Texas.
A rare individual, Mel was well known in the Longhorn industry for his deep knowledge and understanding of the “cowboy” life in general and of the Longhorn breed in particular. He also had the talent of being able to turn that knowledge and understanding into words, both written and spoken . His recent writing, “The Grulla Steed” penned during the time of his final illness, appears in the March issue of the Texas Longhorn Trails.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Moore Raley, a daughter, Shanna and son, Wyatt. His parents, Rev. Ray & Jean Raley, brother, Mike Raley and sister, Bo Stewart. His father and mother-in-law, Ray & Bernice Moore and brother-in-law, Joe Moore and families.
A soft spoken and gentle man, Mel will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
Longhorn Musings ...
by ITTLA President Barry Judd
It seems to me that our association is off to a great start this year with plenty of activities and things for members to take part in, so be ready to do your part.
All of were grieved to learn of the illness and passing of a true gentleman of the West and quiet leader in the Texas Longhorn industry.
We were also shocked to become aware of the untimely death of Dr. Royce Lively, from injuries received in an auto accident.
Also Larry Barker lost his brother, David, to ALS. Our deepest sympathies are extended to these families.
“The next place that I go will be as peaceful and familiar as a sleepy summer Sunday and a sweet, untroubled mind. And yet it won’t be anything like any place I’ve ever been or seen or even dreamed of in the place I leave behind.”
Warren Hanson
“Selling On Tulsa Time”
Reported by Linda Ragains
The newest TLBAA Membership Sale was April 3rd in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Tulsa Stockyards, Bill Sayre & Jim Curry auctioned the cattle and commentary was by Larry Barker.
Of the some 112 cataloged lots the high sellers were a set of cattle consigned by Hudson Longhorns, Purvis, MS. The seven head averaged $1679. Their $3150 lot was high seller of the sale… Moore Longhorn Ranch consigned 10 lots with the high selling lot, Sandy Rhythm going to Meadowwood Longhorns for $1725… The Ragains’ Lone Wolf Ranch 12 consignments averaged $720 with a cow/calf pair at $1500 being the highest. Tim Miller’s 6 lots averaged $800…Mike Bowman consigned 11 lots for an average of $993...Meadowwood consigned 4 lots that averaged $450… Dora Woods had 2 bulls that sold for $900 and $400… And so it went.
It was a little disappointing that cattle didn’t bring more, with the $150 consignment fee, $6 yardage plus health papers and travel, some people didn’t get to much for their cattle.
It seemed the crowd was mainly made up of consignors that wound-up buying each other’s cattle for the most part. As usual it seems that a new sale takes a while to secure a reputation and get the buyers involved to come and purchase cattle.
But then of course big horned cattle still bring big prices and average, less than average $$$
Prominent Longhorn Rancher Dies in Auto Accident
Dr. Royce E. ‘Doc’ Lively died on April 3, 2004 from injuries in an auto accident. ‘Doc’ tremendously enjoyed his Longhorn cattle and his fellow enthusiasts. He was always seen and active in sales, shows and other Longhorn events. He poured his heart and his boots into his ranch in Emory, Texas.
A respected and successful dentist in Coppell Texas, he was very active in the Coppell community. Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club & also served on the school board. “Taken from those who love and cherish him far to prematurely, for a better place.”
Surviving are his wife, Carol, daughters Natalie Lively and Jennifer Diaz, grandsons Corbin & Diego, mother Louise and 2 brothers. May he rest in peace.
DUES...Springtime...Dues...Springtime
by Debbie Lambrecht,
Secretary of Indian Territory Texas Longhorn Association.
Greetings from your Secretary. Spring has sprung, grass is growing, trees leafed out and the bloom is on the sage. Calving season us underway, it’s like going on an Easter Egg hunt to check the pastures and find the new colorful calves hiding out in the new spring growth. However the main thrust of my article this time is membership
DUES DUES DUES.
As you know our year runs September to September. We moved it to there since many pay dues from proceeds of consignments at our August sale. For the rest of us we just need to renew our membership annually. $25 per year or a life membership is $200. I encourage you to renew and get a friend to join also...think of the benefits… “Smoke Signals”, Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha”, “Annual Spring Show and Pow-Wow”, Ranch Tours, Field Days, and out annual Christmas Party hosted by ITTLA. You get a lot for your dues, and you get a lot more when you actively participate in our many activities. Mail your dues in now and continue to be apart of this great association.
The View From The Teepee
Well it looks like we are well underway and into the 2004 Texas Longhorn activities...Shows, Sales, Ranch Tours and Field Days...whatever your interest there is sure to be something to fill it in our longhorn world...if not, well we can create it. All you need do is to bring it up at an Indian Territory meeting and be prepared to help get it underway and shazam it wont be long until all of us will be participating right along with you. As the saying goes only your imagination limits our events… All of us in Indian Territory were very sorry to learn of the passing of several of our Longhorn friends...they will be missed from the campfires of our gatherings, but the memories of their lives and their importance to each of us will live on in our hearts in the days ahead. If we can be of help or assistance, let us… s.d

ITTLA Celebrates Delayed Christmas In OKC and Celebrates New Year
by Debbie Lambrecht, Sec.

Bill Cole reported that the alterations had been made to the trailer by Bob Hurst and was ready to haul the panels purchased by the association.
Reta Weaver gave the year-end financial report as of year-end 2003. In the bank as of 12/31/03 was $7,172.60.
Bill Cole turned the meeting to newly elected President, Barry Judd. Barry announced that Dick Lambrecht would be Sale Chairperson for 2004 and that Bob Pattison would be Show Chairperson for 2004. Anyone interested in assisting these individuals should contact them. The sale is scheduled for August 20-21st in Sulphur and the show is scheduled for May 22-23rd in Wilburton.

Schwartz Farms Lays Claim To First Longhorn of 2004?
By Cindy Schwartz
We had a baby bull born about high noon on new years day I thought the
readers would get a kick out of our entry into 04 , think of the possibilities,
was it the first calf born in Okla-Tex, or in the whole longhorn world ? It’s always a thrill for our family when we get a new longhorn baby.
We bought Miss Jane’s Puzzle at the 2003 TTLA Sale consigned from Smokey 282 Longhorns and we are pleased to be members of ITTLA, and hope ya’ll will stop by our place at Paoli, OK & say howdy.
SPRING SHOW & POW WOW APPROACHING, May 22 & 23
Our brief stint of snow has melted and the Blue Birds have returned to the Kiamichis, which means it isn’t long until the ITTLA Spring Show, and Pow Wow will be getting underway. So get ole Betsy and Sir Dan tuned up and a little feed in them so they will look slick and fit for the show.
Co-Chairpersons Bob and Sue Pattison are planning on another bang up good time for all on the campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, OK deep in the heart of the Choctaw Nation, May 22nd and May 23rd.
Judging the ITLA Qualifying Open Haltered and Loose cattle will be Scott Kimble and Danielle Andrews will do the honors for the Youth Show.
Another looked forward to each year is the Indian Territory Silent Auction with an abundance of very desirous items always on display. John and Linda St. Clair will be your contact persons to submit your items. They always do a great job.
Saturday evening will feature a different menu this year; Spaghetti and meatballs is the main dish with lots of other items. Yup, we will also have our Longhorn Bingo following the meal in the arena, with special prizes.
Sunday morning we will have ’Cowboy Church’ with some special entertainment.
Host motel is the new Wilbert Suites, with a special Indian Territory rate. Call Bob & Sue for more information and entries.
ITTLA Members making the Longhorn News
Flying G Longhorn Ranch, owned by members Paul & Patti Gilbreth was featured in the February Longhorn Trails regarding the location of their ranch both on the Chisholm Trail and in the Chickasaw Nation.
Located North of Duncan, OK a portion of their herd and ranch is at the intersection of Highways 81 and 7. Their herd can often be seen grazing beneath a sign welcoming people to the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma. Paul is a newly elected member of ITTLA board of directors.
Moore Longhorn Ranch was featured in a recent issue of the Texas Longhorn Trails. A very interesting article concerning their ranch history and program. ITTLA charter Life members Ray and Bernice Moore are quickly becoming Longhorn Legends. All were saddened to recently learn of their famous herd sire Diego’s Hot Shot’s death. Bred by Moore Longhorn Ranch he was co-owned with Tyson Leonard.
Ranch Tours and Field Days in ITTLA’S Future
Indian Territory members always look forward to being able to visit member ranches for tours and field days along with our meetings. Two are scheduled.
April 24th a ranch tour is set for Carol Carlson’s C.C.C. Land and Cattle Co. to check out her Texas Longhorn herd. Also included will be a meeting regarding our coming show.
Then on June 26th we will visit Linda & Lee Ragains’ Lone Wolf Ranch for a field day and meeting which would include our Annual Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha and Cow Sale.
Both gatherings will include our potluck lunch, so reserve those dates on your calendar for a couple of ITTLA whoop-ti-de-doos.
Directions and more information will be forthcoming, as we get closer to the events.
We appreciate our members letting us visit their ranches and if any other members would like to be included for a ranch tour or field day in the coming months let us know, it’s a good way to introduce your program to others.
WAAKA LAPISH FALOHA 2004, AUG 20-21-22
Heading up the 8th Annual Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha and Longhorn Cow Sale for 2004 is Dick Lambrecht. ITTLA Vice President, Dick has served as co-chairman for the past two years.
The Festival will be August 20-21-22 in Sulphur, OK. Friday evening will be the “Longhorn Social” with plenty of food drink and visiting. Saturday morning you may view the sale cattle at the Freeman Livestock Sale Barn North of town and the sale of some 125 lots will get underway.
Members will be limited to 4 head each this year so more can participate with a lower amount of cattle in the sale. Consignment is still $50 per animal or pair with a split pair being $75. Steers may be included in the sale but no bulls will be sold in the auction sale. There is however a Bull Alley planned and bulls may be sold there by private treaty.
At the time of this publication several items were yet undecided, which included the auctioneer, and chairpersons of the Food Committee, the entertainment committee, the Publicity /Promotion committee, the Check in Committee (for health papers and transfers) other committees may be names as needed.
Each consignor must be a member of our association and if not a $25 membership will be deducted from the sale proceeds.
Transfers to the registry of choice will also be deducted from the sales proceeds of the consignor. Same as always.
ITLA Heifer Futurity in Conjunction with Sale Talked
There seems to be quite a bit of interest in the International Texas Longhorn conducting a Heifer futurity in conjunction with the Indian Territory Festival of Waaka Lapish Faloha and Cow sale.
Members of the ITTLA board of directors that I have visited with are all in favor of it, if the details can be worked out to the benefit of both organizations.
Presently it may be that the Futurity would be conducted Friday evening during our Longhorn Social, perhaps at the Murray County Fair Grounds. It could include a “Calcutta” of the entries; prize money for winners and some may be included in our sale the following day.
This could make our ‘Festival and Sale’ a bigger event, and create a larger crowd with more buyers and a larger amount of $$$ available to be spent on our sale cattle.
It is an idea that needs to seriously be looked into by our directors.
PANELS AND TRAILER READY TO GO
Word has been received that Bob Hurst and his able assistant, who for now shall remain anonymous, have completed the work on the ITTLA Panel Trailer and it is all ready for the coming season of shows, sales and round-ups.
After our association purchased the trailer, Bob wasted no time in volunteering to see that it was customized to our needs.
We have also been notified that Bob and Sue Pattison have picked up the additional panels from the manufacturer and are all now at their ranch.
I guess the next thing would be to organize a painting party and see that the panels have a coat or two of paint to make them not so nasty to handle and more attractive. If the two Bob’s will set up at time date and place, I betcha we will have plenty of volunteers to get the job done, that is if the ladies will keep the grub a commin…
Thanks to all that got this project underway and complete in time for us to have the trailer and panels available for use this year...Great Job ITTLA, keep up the good work.
The View From The Teepee
Who would have thought that from the seeds planted back in 1995 at the beginning of ITTLA that such an active, successful group of folks would and/or could accomplish what we have done in such a short span of time.
Our association continues to grow in membership, influence and ideas, the recent annual meeting and Christmas party was a fine example. We had the largest crowd at a meeting ever and many new members there taking part and anxious to get 2004 underway with new and bigger events.
New Indian Territory members Sheldon and Patti Buxton, Union City, OK are planning on hosting a longhorn sale in July at Stillwater, OK. This could be another opportunity to market longhorns in an Oklahoma setting. There will be more information available as time goes by.
Also the TLBAA is planning on hosting a sale in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 3rd. It will be a membership sale; all cattle must be registered and transferred TLBAA.
You know the view from the Teepee just keeps on growing with new horizons as new events and people become active in the Texas Longhorn Industry. But time is taking it toll on some of us. To wit; The Moore Longhorn Ranch is in the process of reducing the amount of cattle on their place. Ray and Bernice Moore informed us that they need to get their herd into a more manageable amount of cattle, so you might give them a call to learn what is available. Also Steve and Jane Douglas looked around recently and realized that they had acquired nearly 100 head over time and that it was taking more time than ever to keep up with them and what was once an enjoyable task was becoming not so much f\un. So both ranches are reducing their herds, and you might want to inquire from them the ‘Blue Light Special of the Day’. No this isn’t a fire sale or lets’ get out of the business project, just one that hopefully will make our operations more manageable and again enjoyable. So come call or email, who knows you may get the bargain of the day...Waaka Lapish Faloha.
